What to Expect from Our Tubers

Small Tubers
Our tubers come in all shapes and sizes. If you prefer larger tubers, we may not be the best fit for your needs. Each tuber includes an eye, an intact neck, and a body, which are all essential for growing a healthy plant. Smaller, skinnier, and uglier tubers perform just as well as any other ones. We also trim oversized tubers down to approximately six inches to fit our shipping boxes, which does not impact their ability to grow.

Unique & Natural Appearance
Dahlia tubers are naturally irregular in shape and appearance. They develop underground and can be rough, smooth, twisted, straight, firm, soft, or slightly blemished. We have extensive experience sorting and handling thousands of tubers and can distinguish between healthy and non-viable ones. You may receive tubers with imperfections such as peeling skin, minor body damage, or lenticels (raised pores). These characteristics do not affect their viability. If you expect pristine, uniform tubers, we may not be the best supplier for you.

Dormant & Sprouted Eyes
Our tubers may arrive with different stages of eye development. Dahlia varieties wake up at different times, and we mark visible eyes to help you identify them:

  • Dormant Eyes: Appear as tiny cracks or blemishes on the crown and will sprout when conditions are right.

  • Awake Eyes: Resemble small pearl-like formations and can vary in color (white, green, pink, purple, or red).

  • Sprouted Eyes: Have visible growth emerging from the eye and may be white, green, pink, red, or purple.

Plantable Tubers
Every tuber we sell has been carefully inspected and deemed plantable. If a tuber does not meet our standards, we plant it ourselves. Our fields flourish with tubers of all sizes, shapes, and conditions, proving that even the smallest and most imperfect-looking tubers produce beautiful blooms. Some dahlia varieties naturally produce less attractive tubers, particularly rare and high-demand varieties.

By purchasing from Piper’s Petals, you agree to our shipping policies and understand the nature of our dahlia tubers. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at Piperspetals@yahoo.com. Thank you for supporting our small flower farm!
